Hellebore Weekend?

11 March 2011 16:09:21

Is anyone going to the Mount Venus hellebore weekend either tomorrow or Sunday?

I am trying to make my mind up whether I will go.

I know if I go I will probably spend a fortune. Did anyone who was there recently see the hellebore prices?

No Rachel, staying away for the safety of my wallet, will be there soon enough as I want to get a few special grasses. Enjoy if you do go.

As Fran says enjoy if you go,  am having a lazy weekend.

Rachel,

We visited last weekend and didn't see the hellebores!

I exaggerate, there was about ten plants there, mostly what appeared to be seedling H. x hybridus and one nice one. I didn't note the prices and I wasn't tempted to buy any.

Mary says they were around €20 each.

I won't be going. Can't ask Steve to drive me somewhere on Saturday and Sunday. Will have to give it a miss.

And if they're priced at €20, way too dear. :(

I'm sure you won't be on your own, Rachel. Enjoy it.

Rachel if I lived in Ireland I would come with you enjoy yourself I have paid between £14.99 to £20 for hellebores this year decent sized plants and they are lovely.

Hellebores listed on Mount Venus catalogue about €8.50 for most varieties. I'm planning to go there on Sunday afternoon with my sister if you want to meet up?

Rachel Rachel 11 March 2011 19:15:03

Thanks, folks.

It's a shame your not in Ireland, Yorkshirelass :(

Hazel, I may have to go up to Dublin anyway on Sunday. Can I let you know later?

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 11 March 2011 19:24:20

Yes Rachel, no problem.

I am not going either.  I have never been there and wouldn't know that side of the city well enough to just head off.  I could end up anywhere like at the flats in Dolphin's Barn.   So no to me too.

I saw some Helleborus on Monday when Myrtle and I were there, and thought the prices were about normal. But I was really self-controlled and didnt buy!! (confession:did spend quite a bit on other things:( )

Dick Dick 11 March 2011 22:54:32

Hellebores are worth having but not worth €20. I have three which I bought this year plus the one I had for years and now covers quite a bit of ground. They stand up to the cold weather so much.

TheH (Hazel) TheH (Hazel) 12 March 2011 01:07:28

According to their catalogue the hellebores are about €8.50 at Mount Venus.

Thinking of going up Sunday afternoon. Presumably a lot of other stuff besides Hellibore.

Rachel Rachel 12 March 2011 22:22:20

The weather is too lousy. I don't think I'll go after all, Hazel and Peter. Have fun.

Margaret has just told me that Niall Williams in Midleton, is having a garden opening  next Sat/Sun and he has many hellebores growing in his garden and his daughter, Sandy will be selling hellebores, snowdrops and other spring bulbs. This has become an annual event and has been held for at least the last six/seven years. Is that in Cork, Mary?

That's the one, Rachel, Midleton, Co. Cork, home of the whiskey.
