Euphorbia

Euphorbia ?

Euphorbia ?

I need more Euphorbias in my life!

This is my considered opinion after seeing the way Euphorbia lathyris danced around Deborah and Martin's garden at Terra Nova. Euphorbia is such a good plant, with its fresh green foliage in spring. It reminds me of a salad - so healthy and full of goodness, you just want to gobble it up!

I seem to have lost Euphorbia 'White Swan', which looked so lovely last autumn, and also Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost', the gimmicky one which a lot of us bought at Bloom last year. Mellifera, that I got at Terra Nova last year, is hanging in there.

So, the only fully, healthy, surviving Euphorbia in my garden is this tiny chap. I bought him at June Blake's last year but she couldn't give me a name for him. Can anyone help? It is quite a small plant.

I did a good bit of mulching today and a little planting. Nearly finished the West Garden. Hubby bought me an additional 300 small square pots and a box of 1000 labels. I wonder how long it will take me to use the labels up.

Rachel you should go to Caherhurly Plants at the Plant Fair always has a few nice ones, try E. amygloides purpurea, or Fireglo is lovely, I bought a x martinii from the last year which is the one the cat tore the back off when you visited last time :-) great plants though and evergreen to boot, some as you have found out are tender though, my mellifera is RIP :-( have lots of babies from seed though :-)

Knowing you-though only by repute and reading your journal I would say a week! The only Euphorbia i have is Griffithi I think. Its orange flowered and tough. I know it only reminds you of a salad. The sap is supposed to be quite an irritant-like scrubber at times!

Mine also seemed to suffer over the last couple of winter but they do cut a dash when they're in flower.

Thanks, Bill. I will check out Caherhurly Plants but I am thinking mainly of growing them from seed next year. Fireglow is gorgeous but I was thinking fresher and greener : )

Bill, having said all that, it seems my resolve is not steadfast. Euphorbia amygloides 'Purpurea' does look pretty nice :)

A week for 1000 labels? I wish, Scrubber!

Indeed they do, Geraldine.

Rachel, your description of the Euphorbia in Terra Nova as looking like a salad is a great description.

I don't know much a bout these plants, but I think you need to consider the protection these plants have in Terra Nova, as compaired to your more open site. I am sre with a little homework you will find plant types that will suit your site.

Good luck.

Rachel, meant to ask several times, how are the Tea bushes doing for Norman?

Rachel, Euphorbia characias subsp wulfenii is my favourite and is very striking in Spring. Euphorbia dulvis 'Cameleon' is very pretty, but it is inclined to seed around. Euphorbia melifera has been very badly hit with the frost over the last two winters and I now have only one plant left struggling. Other euphorbias that are good are Euphorbia myrsinits and the named varities of griffithii 'Fireglow' and 'Dixter, but they are a hugh number of others that are really nice. Mary

Fran, we have about 5 tea bushes left, half have been potted on. Lack of light indoors, over winter, did them no favours. No sign of flowers yet.

Thanks Liga and Mary on the recommendations.
