Unidentified Rhodo

Unidentified Rhodo

Just in case anyone can help me with identification of this rhodo, here it is.

There's a photo in my album of the whole plant, showing scale.

The rhodo is about 10 years old and wasn't expensive but I think it had a name when I bought it. The label is long gone.

I remember when this rhodo and its companion were one of the very few plants in my garden. I remember that sometimes they would bloom and no one would see them because of the tall grass :)

Nice one, Rachel. Surely AccSean can help you out here?

Im under pressure now.I'll have a good look through my bible and see what comes up. The trusses are lovely.

Hi Rachel, the closest looking flower to it is R.Sneezy which I have a photo of in my album.Other suggestions are R.Pink Pearl or R.Scintillation. If the new growth is silvery, it may point towards R.Sneezy but I am probably hopelessly wrong.

Ha ha, Sean. No pressure :D I guess it's like being asked to identify a specific orchid. There are so many cultivars, you wouldn't know where to start.

A general question you may know the answer to : the majority of hybrids we buy in garden centres, what species are they hybrids of? Is my rhodo likely to be a ponticum, for example?

Thanks for letting me pick your brains :)

I'm not sure what would be the most used species as a parent and of course so many of the hybrids are bred from hybrids themselves as well so it all gets very confusing. I know R.Ponticum was used extensively as a rootstock years ago and often ended up taking over the new plant but it shouldnt be used for that purpose these days but thats a different subject.
