The Work Continues

Limnanthes douglasii

Limnanthes douglasii

I lifted a load of sods off the ex-Rose Garden today, exposing the first path. Hubby carted them to the dump.

If anyone wants to watch progress on this area (ongoing since 2009) then check out my old album, now renamed 'Ex Rose Garden Make-Over 2009-2011' . I put two photos from today in it. But it's a few albums back. There is no point putting these pics on the journal as they can't be made out.

I plant lots of these as they attract hoverflies who love to dine on greenfly!

Why bring the sods to the dump? Why not stack them to rot down as a source of loam?

Paddy

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 16:31:12

Didn't know that, Brigette. Thanks.

Because there are too many docks and week in my lawn, Paddy. I did that stacking thing to create my raised beds in the past but ended up with a weedy nightmare that took ages to sort out. Then the next time I did it, we never bothered to harvest the loam and weeds grew on top of it, making a second dump. If I had a proper compost area I would put them on but that's work for another day.

I just sowed Limnanthes douglasii last night. I believe they do a good job self-seeding?

Beautiful views over the countryside look forward to seeing the transformation unfold.

It will look great Rachel, will be watching with interest.

Moya Moya 17 May 2011 21:50:25

Great to be able to watch the progress. Your garden is absolutely beautiful and in a lovely setting. It is a real plantperson's garden as you have some many unusual plants and all looking the picture of health.

Re the sods I know what you mean about the weeds. I have just stacked some in an out of the way place and think I will cove them with plastic and leave for a year or so to give weeds time to die.

You sure are a woman on a mission at the moment and I have no doubt that the results will be wonderful.  Will watch with interest :-)

Jacinta, you will never rid yourself of the Scrambled Egg Plant once sown but it makes me smile.

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 22:40:49

Jurga, I know you feel my pain :)

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 22:41:57

Thanks, Geraldine. I guess the trick is to keep the views and just add garden!

Jacinta Jacinta 17 May 2011 22:42:43

Ha ha I read that it is also called 'Poached Egg' plant. I don't mind it sticking around. Probably a bit like Celandine!!!!

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 22:43:08

It's a case of 'snap', Fran. You've just recently finished a big area and are planning another.

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 22:44:11

Ah, thanks, Moya.

Rachel Rachel 17 May 2011 22:45:43

Margaret, thanks for that great plant list that arrived today. I note they stock Seamus O'Brien's favourite herbaceous so... I think I will be partaking :)

Jacinta, my mistake. It is the Poached Egg Plant.
