Double Geranium - Help!

24 May 2011 19:51:17
Which Geranium?

Which Geranium?

Can anyone please help with a name for this beautiful double Geranium?

I saw an identical one today at the Tombrick Garden so I asked the name.

Walter Kelly at the garden said he had been told it was Geranium 'Southcombe Double' but he didn't believe it. When I got home I googled 'Southcombe Double' and I don't believe it either.

I would love to get a name for it.

Hi Rachel as you probably know there are very few double hardy geraniums. I would put my money on G.pratense' plenum Caeruleum',  perhaps you could Google it and see what you think. Can't see the leaf very well in your picture should be palmate with quite serrated edges .

An award of Merit Liga and a year's supply of further questions from all of us!

would full marks do Liga? Well done. Funny this is one I ordered last year but it has not yet  flowered. It is interesting that the flowers appear to flop while most of the pratense are quite erect. How about the flowers on your one  Rachel?

Wonderful, Liga. That is exactly it! You do win a free year's supply for new questions :D

Elizabeth, the flowers on mine are quite erect.

Elizabeth, I just read on Liga's link that in shade the blooms of this Geranium tend to flop. This is because they grow taller in shade. They bloom on shorter stems in full sun and don't flop.

Thanks Rachel most interesting. Love learning more about plants.
