Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana'

Gloriosa superba 'Rothschildiana'

Made a quick trip to the greenhouse this evening and was amply rewarded.

My glory lily has flowered.

I had to put up a quick picture, even though I will take better ones in daylight tomorrow.

10.00am

Took a few photos in daylight. They're in the 'greenhouse' album. There are two flowers open and a sumptuous 11 more buds coming along : )

That is lovely. How in the name of God did you drag yourself away to come in to the computer? Wild horses wouldn't if I had that.

Isn't obsession a wonderful thing? And more fat buds ready to open.

so this is the Glory lily you described a few months ago. its just gorgeous. Even without seeing it months ago I looked for one in Horkins garden centre but staff there ( who are supposed to be experts) never heard of it. Eloquent as you are your description did not do justice to the real thing

Ah the Flame Lilly......it is the national flower of Zimbabwe and you would want to see it grow out there. Stunning!

Rachel Rachel 02 July 2009 10:06:14

The national flower of Zimbabwe, is it, Michael? That's a great fact to know. Have you seen them in flower out there? Isn't it wonderful how we can have all that exotica for our delectation back home in Ireland.

My brother had the most wonderful garden in Harare and I saw them growing there. His driveway was lined with poinsettia trees and was that a sight!

Stunning, Stunning, Stunning

Hi Rachel. I was just flicking through my Hillier's plant names explained as mentioned by Bill and I thought you'd like to know there is a Heuchera called 'Rachel' and it has lovely purple leaves!

Drumanagh Drumanagh 02 July 2009 19:21:13

That is a fabulous flower!

Rachel, it's beautiful.

It's gorgeous. Very exotic looking. Its nearly like a cross between a lily and an orchid.

Yuko Yuko 02 July 2009 21:14:16

Absolutely beautiful & so exotic.

Oooh I like that

Rachel Rachel 03 July 2009 00:21:25

It cost €2.99 as a tuber in Lidl/Aldi this spring. It took a full month to send up a shoot (you might be tempted to give up on it) and it's not hardy. But it is so worth it, Isn't it? I think I'll buy more next spring. Flitters has also grown Glory lilies with success.
