Eucomis, Kniphofia & Cortaderia

Eucomis, Kniphofia & Cortaderia

We went to the zoo today and I could not get over the gorgeous exotic planting.

What kind of budget do they have and how do they get that lot through winter (as I am sure nothing is lifted)?

Last year I saw the swathes of newly planted Eucomis in the African Plains and I was very doubtful as to their possibility for survival.  This year they look naturalised.

Whatever they're doing there, could they please bottle it and sell it to us gardeners?

I am just putting up an album now. But among the exotics (that I could identify) I spied ...

Melianthus major, Echium, Eucomis, Tigridia, Clianthus, Grevillea rosmarinifolia, Crinum, Galtonia candicans, Cardiocrinum gigantium, Darmera peltata, Bergenia ciliata, Hedychium, Agapanthus, Kniphofia caulescens and other Kniphofia, Trachycarpus fortunei, Fatsia japonica & various bamboo.

Wowser! Please take a look at my photos and advise of any mistaken identities. Oh, and if anyone can help with naming the 2 gorgeous Eucomis, I would be very grateful.

Oh, and there were a few animals there too :)

Wow, great photos -- I had no idea the gardens were so good there.  Tempted to hop on the train ;-)

Think the one you have as Clianthus is Hedysarum ?  and the one with the Cotinus is possibly Prunus laurocerasus 'Otto Luyken '  ?

Can't help with the Eucomis I'm afraid

Hey, Margaret, I think you might be right about the Clianthus/Hedysarum. Both are new to me and I have never seen a proper sized plant of either.

The Cotinus is Cotinus though as I saw it close up. Twas a great size!

Thanks for your help.

Great pics would never have thought of the azoo having such planting. I love when you put the names on the pics. Re the Eucomis the only other one I know of is Sparkling Burgundy but the foliage on your one seems darker.

Would be nice to see an odd Animal...........even one.

Great photos, well done to them.

Great planting, all so fitting for the exotic animals too.

Rachel, what I meant is that you have a question mark on number 20 which has Continus and Mahonia and the other is the Prunus..........

Rachel Rachel 25 August 2011 14:29:29

Margaret, I see what you mean and I think you're right. What a queer shrub? Looking at it, I couldn't decide it it was a shrub or herbaceous! I have amended the photos in my album (the only way we can - by deleting the originals and re-importing with the new names). Thanks for all your help. It's great to learn new names.

Fran, by popular demand - see next journal!

Thats interesting, would have thought the leaves looked like laurel alright but would never think to be calling it Prunus!

Love the Eragrostis spectabilis, new one on me, just googled it.

Rachel Rachel 25 August 2011 20:25:44

Not 100% sure of that id, Fran. But I have 4 Eragrostis spectabilis in year 2 so I would be delighted if they turned out like that zoo plant!

Haven't been to the zoo in years, enjoyed the photos!
