Century Plant

Agave americana 'Madiopicta'

Agave americana 'Madiopicta'

My son is home from college so I got him to bring in the Agave from the greenhouse.

I kept a space for it in the kitchen.

Last year when I brought it in I 'cut its nails', snipping off the sharp tips at the end of each leaf. It was encouraging to see that all the leaves, except one, now have sharp tips again. I guess they are new growth and the old leaves were cut off.

This plant is special to my son. He adopted one of its babies and named it Tropius, after a Pokémon. I know that one day he will take charge of the parent plant and all its babies.

Rachel - put wine corks on the spikes; it helps prevent accidents. Those spikes are deadly and painful.

That's a good idea, Paddy, but it would take a lot of wine!

But, it's such a good reason to drink wine.

By the way, champagne corks work better.

A lovely plant, did you or is it easy from seed?

Rachel Rachel 10 December 2011 20:37:13

So true, Paddy :D

Tina, this one was bought in France and brought home in the car on my knee. They would be very slow from seed.

TinaJ TinaJ 10 December 2011 21:12:53

Thanks rachel,

that is one angry looking plant but it looks brill, when i saw the picture first i thought it was a variegated aloe, but then came to my senses and thought there is no such thing as a varigated aloe

Lìga Lìga 11 December 2011 14:57:06

It looks huge!!!Good when you have big house for all them plants :)))

Conrad Conrad 12 December 2011 10:47:13

That's a beauty Rachel, mine has a fair bit of growing to do before it looks as impressive.

Rachel Rachel 12 December 2011 22:59:26

It's not huge, Liga, but certainly big enough to not want to loose.

Unfortunately, Conrad, they do take a while to grow up :)

Conrad Conrad 13 December 2011 11:28:51

That I don't mind Rachel, they're easier and much less dangerous to overwinter small. :)
