Verbascum bombyciferum 'Saffron Towers'

Verbascum bombyciferum 'Saffron Towers'

Some people were commenting on my Verbascum in the last few journals.

This is the nicest Verbascum in the garden (if we don't count the new spore Verbascum 'Ishtar', which I am a bit prejudiced towards :))

This one pops up in the West Garden and one other place, where it was originally sown. I suppose I get about 10 volunteers, that come to fruition, in a year. It is a good number but not enormous. I could always do with a few more of this plant and I love the way it pops up in the most unusual of places.

This Verbascum is great for foliage and architecture and has yellow flowers. Other kinds have prettier flowers but look less well when not in flower.

And before you ask, I have been unable to collect seed from this plant. I've managed with the other three types of Verbascum in my garden but this one defeats me despite many and varied attempts :(

I think this spike looks very funny, like it's in jail. It kept getting tangled with the fence and freed and now looks like it's looking over wistfully

I only had one plant this year, started out doing well. Then in a matter of days wilted, and turned to mush, no idea what it was. One to be replaced ;-))

A great plant all the same, and great that you have a unique one to your garden.

Hay, carefull, you sure that ain't an alian ?????

Just looking at your photos, ther'e great, i love the scerasenia ( god my spelling is not good, is that spelt right, in the absence of a spell checker that i can't find ) i hade one some years ago, it grew to 2' 6" and had a beautiful yellow flower, very unusual, a friend at work gave it a good sniff, and had the next week off work, alledgly caused by my poor little plant,  SHAME

The link to the Japanese garden in Wexford is great, thanks, when i drive back to England to see my Family i will try and arrange some time to visit, on the way to Rosslair harbour.   Badger

Hard to belive it is a real plant, more like a fluffy coat hanger.  I will definately have to introduce Safffron Towers to my garden, I love the Verbascum snow maiden you gave me a few years ago and has readily seed about since.

That's a shame, Fran. It is worth trying again though. The first of those Arisaema poked up yesterday - miles behind yours :O

Maybe it is an alien, Badger :) Your friend was pulling your leg about the Sarracenia. They have no smell, bad or otherwise. I grow plenty of stinkers but that's not one of them.

Soft to the touch, Andy! Might that swing it one way or the other?

Yeah, Linda that other Verbascum seeds more. I think all the bombyciferum ones have the nice, soft grey foliage (in case you can't find 'Saffron Towers').

Lovely plant I found four seedlings this year I think from V. artic summer but I'm not sure so will have to wait till next year to find out. Fran Rachel gave me one of these three years ago and i had two together and one did brilliantly while the other did just what yours did.

Love andyF7's comment, I was thinking the same thing. Bill kindly told me what mine was in 2010, it just shot up. I let it go to seed and spent a long time in 2011, getting rid of hundred of seedlings out of my patio, I left some in one place and they are doing ok, then yesterday I noticed  one about a foot high in the front garden, down by the gate. Mine had yellow flowers and got to about 5ft high, was a great conversation piece at the time. Enjoy.

Rubberboots, I bought a Verbascum at a plant sale two years ago, being told it was lamb's ears. It shot up to about 7ft and was the best plant sale buy ever. I collected seed last year.

Just found another verbascum about to flower behind a seat... must be a seedling of one of your original verbascums Rachel..  the greener one I think

Well, it's still good news, Bill.
