Seed Trays

07 March 2010 23:04:33

It was a glorious sunny spring day today and it was great to get outside. Just as well really, as the heating oil just finished! Always hard to know whether to buy more oil at this time of year or not.

I did a bit of cutting back and a bit of mulching while hubby sprayed the newly created  end to our garden with hefty weed-killer. I also spent a good hour  in the greenhouse, watering thoroughly and doing a few bits of discarding.

On the positive, my goji plants have buds and the smaller edible physalis is re-sprouting from the base. There's a surprise! Also, the root cuttings of sea kale, which I took last autumn - I saw a bud on one of them. I'm sure others will follow. The sedum cuttings are also looking well.

But then I had to do kid drop-offs and collections so decided to check Aldi in Enniscorthy for seed trays. I had already checked Gorey. Not a one. We were then off to the cinema in Arklow so I dropped into Aldi there to check for the same but had no luck. I really should have bought more of them. Not sure what to do now as I do like the Aldi size trays and really like their cheaper price! Maybe I'll try Carlow.

They had very similar in Lidl too, Rachel.

I saw those, Jacinta. They are a little bit smaller. My seedling organisation is dependent on the Aldi size of tray. With the Lidl one, I think I would have to pot on before June.

Lovely camellia you got today. What colour are th flowers?

Jacinta D Jacinta D 07 March 2010 23:12:56

Sure was, Rachel. That would have cost me a fortune in a garden centre. I think Mairin said it had white flowers with a pink edge. Either way, all Camellias are gorgeous.

Fine healthy, glossy leaves on it too. A white one is also a little bit different. And no better home for it! People are so generous on this site. Still delighted with all those orchids I got from you at Arboretum.

The Lidl ones don't have any holes in the bottom of them, as I discovered after I had them planted up!  Should have gone to Spec-savers instead of Lidl.

Seed trays,  why spend money.  I use the used plastic meat tray containers from the supermarket.  Just get yourself a leather/tin punch in the hardware / toolstore (the hammer type) and punch a few drain holes in the bottom of the trays.  I know they are small but they are free.  I put compost in a black one,  sit it on sand in a slightly bigger one and then bulldog clip a clear one on top.  Makes a super little propagator.

You can judge from the colour of the sand if it has gone dry and needs water.

Will have to inspect the trays I got in Lidl the other day thanks Marin for pointing out they have no drainage, They are certainly smaller than the ones I bought in Pound stretcher but it was a case of see and buy in the hope that more seed would be sown - wishful thinking mind you due to work.

I know the feeling with the oil. I think we are also coming to the end of ours. Hope these night time temps improve very quickly. But at least I have an open fire in the living room.

Last night was one of the coldest yet so our heating bill will still be rising!
