Darlingtonia & Sarracenia psittacina

Darlingtonia & Sarracenia psittacina

One of last winter's survivors in the greenhouse, is my sarracenia collection.

They are just waking up from dormancy at the moment and one is even producing a flower. Sarracenia produce their flowers before their carnivorous pitchers to ensure pollination. No point in eating the insects that are going to pollinate you!

The picture shows 'evergreen' carnivorous plants.

Sarracenias never cease to amaze me. Beautiful.

Do they actually eat insects or is it a bit of a myth?

Yes! But they don't grab them the way a Venus Fly Trap would. The insect falls into the pitcher and gets caught in the sticky enzymes. And digests it. :)

Jacinta has it spot on, Mairin.

I hate to see them get bees in the summer, and bees seriously reduced in numbers already. But it's just a plant - it traps whatever goes into its pitchers.

Great looking plants

They so big already?I remeber you cut them back last autumn.Very good looking!

Rachel Rachel 17 March 2010 10:32:52

No, Liga, these two didn't die back or get cut back. They stayed like that all winter, despite the terrible cold. Now new pitchers are growing from the base. The ones that died back/got cut back are just beginning to send up new growth too.
