Hens

Today we bought a chicken coop and 3 brown laying hens.

They are to be delivered on Friday with feed, grit and bark - the full package!

There is much excitement in our house today since the kids were told. Sammy is hoping to chase the poor things but seems to have been placated by thoughts of collecting eggs.

The chicken coop has a run with it and can be moved around the garden as and when the grass dies. It is the sussex model, like in the picture and it can hold up to 6 hens.

Feeling a little bit nervous now!

I'll be watching carefully too Rachel, as her indoors fancied keeping hens too, can send you on the light requirement guide for hens I got at the Bay Garden chicken talk last year would you use that Rachel?  Baking and Boiled, fried poached and omlettes galore!!

we have 4 hens we have so many eggs we are giveing them away did you know you can freeze them Ann has lots frozen.

Dick Dick 23 March 2010 19:06:17

Hello Rachel. Well done regarding the hens. I suppose what you give them is chicken feed.

spider spider 23 March 2010 20:24:09

You cannot lose with hens. If their good hens you get eggs for the breakfast and fertiliser for the lawn. If there bad hens you get a few chicken dinners and you have a large hut to keep the new rabbit in.

This is a real upmarket henhouse, kids will really enjoy not just eating the eggs but possibly if their like kids I know develop a nice little business. Good luck to all with the new additions

Thanks, Linda, Una & Clara.

I hope we will not suffer from foxes, LNolan, I think nothing short of an electric fence will stop a determined fox.

Yes, Siobhan & Bill, plenty of fresh eggs. I would use that guide, Bill, next time we meet up.

Ha ha, Jacinta. You and Linda make a witty team!

Bridgette, we got the everything from Old McDonald's in Carlow. Keep working on that hubby!

Rachel Rachel 24 March 2010 17:56:57

Thanks, John, for that tip. Would you freeze eggs shell and all?

Dick, yes chicken feed to start with anyway. We will look at other options later.

Sean, don't tell my kids about the rabbits. They're happy with the chicken idea at the minute. I hope everything goes well.

Thanks, Ruth & Jurga. I may be contacting you yet, Jurga. This is all new to me. I hope the chicken didn't do too much damage in the polytunnel.

Thanks, Myrtle. I like the look of the hen house too. It looks bigger in the photo than in real life.

Thanks, Fran & Liga.

Can't imagine my kids having enough business acumen to start a business, Geraldine! Getting my teenage son through his transition year mini-project was bad enough!

Love the chicken house.  Wouldn't want one personally but it does look great.  Best of luck with them.
