About my garden: The garden design took a long time to create and refine but now most of the main bits are in place. The front garden has a woodland theme and is mainly planted with native trees and shrubs. I planted a clover lawn to keep the weeds at bay and already the soil seems to be improving! It is mainly a clay soil - sort of blueish in colour so is easily compacted and tends to waterlog quite a bit. The back garden is flowers and shrubs and anything that can survive the wind!
More about me: Hi I'm Hazel. We moved to Laois in late 2007 and I have started a garden from scratch in the country after many years of gardening in Dublin. My husband Brendan set me the challenge of creating a garden without lawns...not an easy task on half an acre! Gardening in the country is presenting new challenges - rabbits that sample everything I plant, and crows that dig up what the rabbits leave behind! Our site is south facing but extremely exposed. Most of my planting from last year survived the -6 frost last winter.
