Had a Acer Sango-Kaku growing in my garden for 4 years (approx 3 ft high)and it did not survive the winter – or so I thought. Just went out to inspect it again, and to my delight there is a little branch growing just at the base of the main tree trunk. I was planning on replacing it but should I leave it in that position, or should I dig it up and put in it a pot and nurse it back to health?

It is possible that the graft union with the rootstock has died and the new shoot is the ordinary green form from the rootstock. But leave it be, do not lift it, and you will eventually be able to tell if it is ‘Sango Kaku’ or the rootstock.
