Apple tree

Vivien Reid asked 12 years ago

When pruning our apple tree today we noticed some branches on one side had twisted shoots – looked like a witch hazel tree! What would cause this? Is it a disease? It is more than 40 years old and is a keeper apple, not sure of the name but has upright growth and long high branches. We live in Shankill close ot the railway line and the sea.

Twisting of the branches on apple may have been caused by a virus most likely. Or possibly some pesticide years ago, or, least likely, a mutation in part of the tree.

If it is virus related, the tree is likely to crop poorly on that side, and may weaken further.
