Apple Trees

joe warde asked 16 years ago

Gerry,
In the last 10 days I planted several apple trees using rootstock M111 (large standard). I allowed 12ft between them and have now read elsewhere that I should have allowed 18ft +. Can they be moved now or will I leave well enough alone? They were from containers.
Thanks.

A spacing of 12 ft is too tight for the vigorous MM111 rootstock and the trees should be 4 to 6 metres apart, ie, 14 ft to 20 ft.

Planted just a few days ago from containers, it is not a big problem to carefully lift and re-plant immediately. Water each week until there is good active growth.
