I want to do some autumn cuttings in pots. What mixture should I use and when is the best time? How wet should the mixture be?

In general, cuttings of evergreen trees and shrubs are taken from August to October, using 2 parts peat and 1 part sand mix in pots or trays. Dip the cuttings in rooting powder and place the trays in a cold frame, or low tunnel or covered with white polythene in a tunnel or greenhouse. or use a small heated propagator to speed up rooting. The cuttings can be potted on in spring at the first signs of growth.
The compost should be watered just before insertion and very lightly afterwards and the cover should keep moisture in until rooting. Only water if the surface dries slightly. It must never be wet.
