Beech Trees dying

Martin Moran asked 15 years ago

I was hoping you can help me or point me in the right direction. I bought and planted 500 bare rooted beech trees, 5 per meter, to form a hedge around my garden in May. It all apeared to be growing well until last month when leafs on a few plants start to brown and wither, now plants are dying and the symptoms appear to be spreading to more and more plants. Any ideas to what it could be ?

May is much too late for planting bare-root beech. The trees have leafed out on the energy they contained and are now running out of steam. A proportion may survive, hard to say how many.

Beech is difficult enough to root bare-root and should be planted before mid-March, in well-drained, fertile soil.
