I have been plagued in recent years with the fly & I wondered if the deep freeze we have experienced would kill the fly larvae, as the ground was frozen to such a depth.

Carrot fly numbers of larvae could well be reduced by harsh weather but it is pretty certain that enough will survive to cause trouble. The best solution is a carrot fly fence of polythene, about 80cm tall, 20 cm in the soil to keep it steady and no gaps at the overlap of sheeting. The area should be long and narrow, rather than short and wide as the flies can blow over the top and get into a wide space.
