Dahlias – stored

Anne McLoughlin asked 8 years ago

It said last week to check on stored dahlias to make sure they have not dried out. I thought that the idea of storing them was to make sure that they are dry before being put away so that they don’t rot. I dried mine & put them in newspaper in a box. Surely if I take them out and soak them, it defeats the purpose of storing them dry?

Dahlias are best allowed to dry off before storage, but loss of moisture can continue in store and become excessive and the tubers may shrivel and die.

If they are shrivelled, they can be soaked, allowed to dry off reasonably well and returned to storage.

As shoots begin to appear, keep a close watch for greenfly.
