Damaged escallonia Hedge

Pat McCaffrey asked 13 years ago

My 2 metre high mature escollonia screening hedge is badly damaged after the 2 cold winters and also has lost most of its leaf from severe leaf spot. If I cut it back will it resprout or what is the best replacement that will grow fairly fast and can be mantained at a height of about 2 metres.

Escallonia has suffered more from leaf spot than frost but it is unlikely to prove satisfactory, given the likelihood of continuing damage by leaf spot.

Assess the level of damage and repalce the hedge if it is too bad. Common laurel would be a good replacement or holly.
