early potatoes soft

martyo asked 13 years ago

I dug some of my early potatoes (Leager) today and found some that were really soft and smelled. Do you know what this could be? There was no blight and stalk looked healthy if a little wind battered.

If there is a smelly rot, this is caused by a bacterial soft rot, of which there are several kinds but usually a disease called blackleg.

Affected plants wilt and turn yellow relatively early the stem rots to black under soil and the tubers can be affected and rot.

it usuall only affects a few plants which should be dug up and removed.
