A north-facing garden is likely to have a considerable degree of shade, and shade reduces flowering. But you can use colourful leaves to give evergreenery and some yellow-splashed leaves. There are shrubs that flower in shade, such as mahonia, viburnum and camellia on acidic soil.

Flowers that cope with shade include hostas, astilbes, epimediums and foxgloves.
