Grass clippings as a mulch?

I would like to know your opinion on using grass clippings for mulching a flower border and a shrub border. We produce a lot of clippings when the lawn is growing and I have been putting some of them on the borders to cut down weeds, conserve moisture and to rot down into the soil – but not too thickly as if I do they ‘sludge’ up.

Lawn mowings can be spread lightly over a shrub border, not so good on a flower border.

Mowings tend to have grass seeds and these can cause a weed problem.

Under shrubs this is more easily dealt with as the shrubs cast shade. The grassy weeds could be more of a problem among flowers.

Thinly spread, not more than 5cm at a time, it can work out quite well as the earthworms tend to break them down.
