Greenfly on silver birches

Phyl O\’Leary asked 14 years ago

During this and the past three summers the silver birch in my front garden have been infested with greenfly and seem to ooze sap onto the cars underneath. However there are silver birch in the woodland behind our house and none of these are infected. Is it necessary to treat the trees in the front and with what? They are about twenty feet high.

Silver brich commonly suffers from greenfly attack, either in the garden or in woodland. However, in woodland there is a more likelihood of the greenfly being attacked by its parasites and predators, including blue tits.

While greenfly attack tends to reduce growth and can be problematic for cars parked underneath, it is impossible to spray large trees. If populations of greenflies are sufficiently high, predators and parasites will be attracted.
