Anne Good asked 14 years ago

We recently invested in a tunnel. We have been studying lots of gardening books but we are now confused!! But thats easy! would you suggest growing the plants directly into the ground or grow in containers. would I set seeds now or wait until the end of February, I have a propagator.

Tomatoes can be sown from December but you would need heating. Normally for a cold tunnel the seeds asre sown in February or early March. You are in Cork, which is mild and you could sow in mid-February.

Plant into the open soil, well prepared and enriched with manure or compost. Watering is much easier with plants in the open soil and they grow better.

In the long term, root diseases might build up but you should avoid these by sowing seeds and raising your own tomato plants.
