Cathriona Sheahan asked 16 years ago

Hi Gerry,We have a problem with boundary conifers we put down october 06, in the bad weather they got alot of windburn at the side facing the bad wind and has turned all brown wheras the other side is perfectly green, is there a chance that they will come again or is there anything we could do for them? Thank you .

Sounds like severe wind, and probably salty wind. If it is salt damage, and these are cypresses of some form, this will re-coccur for the life of the trees and they are just not suitable.

Better choices would be olearia, griselinia, holly or escallonia, which have the ability to re-sprout whereas cypresses do not.

Never plant in autumn on  a windy site, plant in spring to give the plants a chance to get going.
