hedge for exposed site

Donal Bourke asked 16 years ago

Gerry,
What hedge would you recommend to plant to give shelter on an exposed site. What do you think of Leylandii.
Have you any alternatives to Leylandii and have you any management tips for this hedge.
Regards

Much depends on how much space is available. If there is plenty fo space, plant a shelter belt of trees. If there is less space, plant a hedge.

If it is exposed to sea wind, you can use griselinia, olearia or escallonia. In inland areas, holly and yew make good evergreen hedges and hornbeam and hawthorn are good deciduous kinds.

Leyland cypress can make good hedge but tends to get too big and cannot be cut back beyond the green parts or it will not re-sprout.
