Holly hedge

Mick Hynes asked 12 years ago

Will a holly (Ilex aquifolium) hedge be suitable for planting very close to the sea and also be resistant to a heavy frost. How large are the plants available to buy from nurseries as I would like it to be as high as possible?

Holly makes a very good traditional hedge, and it is good near the sea and hardy.

But if you are planting near the sea, start with small plants as large ones will have trouble dealing with exposure while they are settling in.

Maintain good weed control and, in a very exposed site, use a net screen to shelter the young hedging until it is established.
