Most junipers are relatively small and can be planted within a few metres of a housewall. Do not plant closer than a couple of metres as the tree needs some space and will look cramped if planted too close.

Thuja can be small or very large and the small ones are fine close to a house, while the large species such as Thuja plicata, should be kept back 15 metres or more, not least to reduce the shed of foliage debris inot gutters.
