how to protect olive tree in winter?

Breda Hesnan asked 15 years ago
A friend planted a mature olive tree last year in a fairly open space in a large garden in Co. Meath. It was nearly May before any new leaves appeared on branches. Any tips for preparing it for this winter please.

Moving it to Spain might be the best thing. Olives are not truly hardy even in mild coastal gardens and in the middle of the country, a severe frost will get it sooner or later. Try wrapping with bubble wrap or fleece on cold nights, or if in a pot bring it under cover.
