How to save my Wollemi Pine

Sandra Reid asked 13 years ago

I’ve a Wollemi Pine about 4 years old now. It grew very well in the first two years. Last winter’s frost seems to have killed it, as the stems went brown and fell off quite easily. The winter before that the tip of the plant died (no wax polar cap formed), so I pruned it off and new growth appeared the following spring, just below where I cut it. This year I think frost has killed it. Not sure what to do now or how can I know if it’s actually dead. Could this also be a fungicide problem?

The Wollemi pine caused a great stir when it was found just a few years ago, a very ancient tree down to a last few survivors in Australia. SInce then it has been propagated and is now available. It is related to monkey puzzle, which is hardy, and to Norfolk Island pine which is not.

It is not completely hardy below -5 degrees Celsius. Older trees might survive lower temperatures but young trees can be killed.

Leave it for a couple of months at least and see what happens. Nothing to do otherwise.
