hydrangea too big

daniel o\’ shea asked 13 years ago

When is the best time to cut back hydrangeas, i have done so before with a powered hedge cutter and as a result lost some flowers, but i really want to keep my area neat and not to have a hydrangea over populate a space. so, how can i cut it back and when?

Hydrangeas can be cut back in March. If all shoots are cut back, flowers will be lost.

The idea should be to thin out, with a lopping shears, the number of branches in March each year … taking out about one in five … so that no branch is more than 5 years old and the bush stays to a reasonable size and still flowers.
