Life of a sunflower

Colman O\’Reilly asked 14 years ago

I grew giant sunflowers this year with great success even if the flowering was slow and then short lived. However I’m of the opinion that these flowers are just a one off and you must start from scratch again next year. Is this so ?

Sunflowers are an annual flower, which means they last one year and seeds must be sown each year.

There are several perennial relatives of sunflowers that come up each year, such as Helianthus decapetalus, but these do not have the large flowers of the annual sunflower.
