lilac trees

Michael Condra asked 16 years ago

I have a lilac tree given to me as a slip some 30 years ago and my children would like to take slips from it. When and how should take them? Soft or hard cuttings? Hope you can help? .

Cutings can be taken in summer. Using the tops of the new shoots about 15cm long, removing the leaves off the lower half, dip them in rooting powder and insert five or six to a pot with one parts coarse sand to two parts peat.

Cover the pot with a white plastic bag to keep moisture in and place it in a bright place out of direct sunlight. Whent he roots come out of the bottom the pot, they can be potted on into bigger pots.
