moss garden

ed dunlea asked 15 years ago

My wife and I have a shaded part in our garden and would love a japanese style moss garden, but are finding it hard to source seeds here in Ireland. Any ideas as to where we can find enough to cover approx a 5th of an acre? Thanks ,virgingardener

Moss grows from spores, not seeds, and these are carried free gratis on the wind.

If the area is shaded and the surface stays damp for long periods, all you have to do is wait.

Japanese moss gardens, in Japan, are extremely labour intensive, leaves being removed by hand etc. But you can approximate reasonably well.

The surface soil should be allowed to settle and not be disturbed. Control weeds by using Roundup, alternating with Basta if willowherb becomes common. Remove leaves in early winter.

The soil will be spawned with moss spores naturally and moss will soon establish.
