I mulched my apple trees this winter with well rotted horse manure. But then I heard that this is not a good thing to do because it promotes too much soft growth. Should I remove the mulch?

Horse manure and similar rich feeding can cause apple trees to be more prone to apple canker and apple scab diseases, especially those trees growing in heavy soil and in the higher rainfall areas of the country.

If the soil is light and free-draining, it is fine.
