Old Apple Trees

Patricia Havelin asked 14 years ago

I would like to know what to do with two old apple trees at this time of year. My Father used to care for them but since he died they fall too soon, are too small and worms or insects have bored holes in them. I have heard that grease bands should be put on the trunks now. Is that right? and when and with what should I spray them?

Old, over-grown trees can be brought back into production by pruning, feeding and spraying. Thin out the old branches in winter, removing broken or crossing branches. Feed in spring with 50 grams of general fertilizer or fruit fertilizer per square metre. Spray in April, May and June with an apple scab spray.

Grease bands are of limited value.
