Onion sets can be planted in autumn to over-winter, or planted in late winter or spring. There is a small advantage in terms of earliness by autumn sowing, but also some danger of losses due to harsh weather and slugs.

Autumn-sown sets requite very little in the way of nutrients … any ordinary fertile soil will do. They could be given a light feed or a liquid feed in early spring to replenish nutrients lost to winter rain.
