Paving on Concrete

Roisin Byrne asked 15 years ago

I am paving the entire of my concrete rectangular yard (15′ x 6′) with paving slabs. I have read the paving section but am wondering if I can lay the slabs on sand as I’m hoping to do the work myself and would be nervous about getting involved with concrete/mortar.

Paving onto concrete is quite possible and the concrete will make a good base, but using a sand base between the existing concrete and the new slabs tends to led to uneven support and eventual rocking, or uneven subsidence as the sand is difficult to firm evenly onto a hard surface.

It can be done using a sand base, but a mortar bed, or five mortar spots under each slab allows for better accuracy of level and a more solid fit.
