Pea Straw

Kate Kelly asked 15 years ago
Do you have any idea where I can buy pea straw? I have been sent a link from Gardening Australia which shows a method for growing spuds which uses pea straw amongst other things, but I can’t figure out where to buy it in Ireland. No one seems to mention it.It is commonly used in Australia for many things.I appreicate your time and help.

Very few peas are grown in Ireland and pea straw would be ploughed back into the ground, so it is not to be got.

Pea straw is used in some countries as a mulch and source of organic material, the idea being to keep in moisture in a dry climate. There is no need to mulch potatoes here but mulches (garden compost) can be used on vegetables, espcially on light soil.

Part of the art of gardening is to adapt to conditions and to use the resources to hand!
