Planting suitable trees for privacy

Grace O\’Driscoll asked 15 years ago
I have a medium size suburban garden, south facing and overlooked by upstairs windows of my neighbours houses. I would like to plant trees along the back wall that would give the garden and patio area privacy. I would prefer evergreen trees to give privacy all year round and not necessarily all the same type of tree. Would you have any suggestions?

It is not necessary to have evergreen trees for privacy. Deciduous trees give a nice veil that is usually adequate.

There are plenty of broadleaved evergreens to choose from, such as griselinia, laurel, pittosporum, hoheria, holly and olearia.

You can clip these into a hedge if you have not enough space.
