Plants Native to Ireland

Margaret Mason asked 13 years ago
Where can I find plants native to Ireland that are good for birds and insects? I have a small back garden which is fenced in and would like a border with large shrubs for wildlife as much as is possible in a suburban back garden.

While native species are best for wildlife, you do not want to fill your small garden with hawthorn, blackthorn, hazel, furze and ivy.

Irish wildlife is versatile when it comes to food and many foreign plants are very good for wildlife. For instance, butterfly bush is better than any native for butterflies, to judge by the numbers that attend.

So once you have a good mix of plants, you will have plenty of wildlife.
