can you use the ash from a wood pellet home heating system as a source of potash to soft fruit and apple trees.

Any kind of wood ash can be used on a garden, including fruit trees. Wood ash contains up to about 5% potash, though it can be less than half that.
It also supplies calcium and can be the equivalent of about half the amount of lime. Too much lime is not good for fruit trees as they prefer the soil to be slightly acidic.
So do not use large amounts. A few handfuls scattered over the root zone would be beneficial each spring. If you find the leaves showing yellowing or patterning, it is too much.
Wood ash could be used over a vegetable area too as vegetables like more lime.
