Problem with Aucuba

Marie Hughes asked 12 years ago

I have an Aucuba which is going black, I have cut out the dead branches but the rest of the plant is now going black. Should I dig out the plant and if I do will I be able to replace it with another Aucuba? It is planted in a shady spot and was doing very well. I have attached some photographs. Seppie

Aucuba always turns dark-brown or black when damaged and in this case it looks like a root rot or dieback of the branches lower down that has crept up to the leaves when the stem died.

This is unusual and aucuba can take a good deal of shade. Plant again but not on the same spot and check that the roots are white and healthy at planting.
