problem with golden rod

The plant is growing strongly but in the last couple of weeks the leaves from the ground up the stem for about twelve inches are dying ,what can be done to rectify this

It is not unusual for tall perennials, including golden rod, to lose leaves low down the stem as the top develops … even more if the soil is too dry. For this reason, it is usually used in the middle of a border where its stems can be hidden with other plants.
