Mary Keegan asked 13 years ago

We have a mature plum tree over 15 years old – it has never been pruned and has fruited really well over the years however it needs a good pruning the main trunk of the tree has grown very high can we cut this main trunk or will this be too much of a shock for the tree

It is best to prune plum trees as little as possible as it can allow disease to enter the wood. Ideally, the tree is pruned when young until it fruits and then fruiting reduces its vigour.

You can remove some branches in summer, shortening long brnaches for instance, but try to avoid cutting into large branches.
