I am hoping you can help me with some information. Attached are two photos of plants i have growing in my back yard. Firstly, could you tell me the name of these plants and secondly, i have noticed recently that they are going very brown, i have been feeding them with shrub feed and watering them every second day. I live near Dublin City Centre and only have a yard and no garden. The plants are in earthenware pots, against a red brick wall in the yard. I am just interested to know am i doing something wrong that is causing them to go brown and what i can do to reverse this. I would be most grateful for any information you can give me.

These appear to be ‘cloud-trained’ cypresses. These are trained trees, completely dependent on timely watering and if they are going brown, there might have been a spell dutin which they were not watered. This can show up later even if they hav ebeen watered since.

They probably do not need watering every second day, but should be watered enough to keep them just nicely moist, and never wet and never dry. The feedign can be detrimental if it was applied too generously.

Liquid feed with Miraclegrow or similar about once every 3 or 4 weeks from April to September … no more.
