seedlings sliced through at base

Crocarb asked 16 years ago
I transplanted several courgette seedlings into a bed about a month ago, and one after another, three of them were sliced through the stem at soil level and were left lying there.Would a cutworm be likely to be the problem here? Would it attack these two plants? Can you think of anything else that might be to blame?

Yes, that would be typical cutworm damage. They operate just below soil level, feeding at night, and when you see the first seedlings go down, you can usually search and find the culprit within a few centimetres of the damaged plant and generally just below soil surface.
