Could you please explain about composting wood shavings and why there can be a problem (bacteria using up all necessary nitrogen, or something?

Wood shavings can be composted or used as a mulch and will tend to use up available nitrogen nutrient.

However, this is released again when the shavings rot down.

Usually wood shavings become available after use as horse bedding and usually with a complement of urine which is a good source of nitrogen, so there is usually a net gain of nitrogen nutrient.
